Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is a private research university in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Founded in 1861. MIT was adopted as a model for the European Polytechnic University, to confirm the laboratory instruction in applied science and engineering.

Researchers worked on computers, radar, and self-direction during World War II and the Cold War. Research in defense after the war contributed to the rapid expansion of the college and university under the leadership of James Kilian. Massachusetts Institute of Technology – MIT is located on 168 acres (68.0 hectares) of the current campus in 1916 and extends to more than 1 mile (1.6 km) along the northern bank of the Charles River Basin.

The institute is traditionally known for research and education in physical sciences and engineering, and recently in biology, economics, linguistics, and management as well. The Institute is often cited as among the best universities in the world.

As of 2015,MIT students received about 85 Nobel laureates, 52 National Medal Awards for Science, 65 Marshal flags, 45 Rhodes scientists, 38 MacArthur colleagues, 34 astronauts, 19 Turing Award winners , 16 chief of scientists from the US Air Force.

The current Council consists of 43 members elected for five years, 25 members voting until they reach the age of 75, 3 officers elected (President, Treasurer and Secretary) and 4 ex officio members (President of the Alumni Association, Massachusetts Governor, Massachusetts Secretary of Education Education, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Massachusetts).

Massachusetts Institute of Technology – MIT has five schools (Science, Engineering, Architecture and Planning, Management, Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences) and one College (Health Sciences and Technology College), while law and medicine schools are located. The current president is Rafael Reeve, who served as former dean of President Susan Hawkfeld, the first woman to hold the position.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology – MIT graduated around 120,000 graduates, who have achieved great success in scientific research, public service, education, and business. As of 2014, about 27 MIT graduates have won the Nobel Prize, about 47 have been selected as Rhodes scientists, and 61 have been selected as Marshall scientists.
